Do you have an 18 month old jumping out of their crib? I found the solution…you’re welcome.
I wake up in the morning to a noise and jump out of bed to investigate, assuming it would be Kaylin playing with some toys in her room. Only it wasn’t Kaylin playing…it was Braden.
Braden, my 18 month old dare devil that sleeps in a crib. A CRIB. A Crib that is supposed to prevent my toddler from being able to get in and out at his own leisure.
I never heard him jump or even cry but somehow, this little mastermind crib felon had escaped the pen. Crib Pen that is.
Surely it was a fluke, so I do what any normal parent who is in denial about their kid being able to get out of the crib at such a young age would do…I stuck him back in and watched him get out. I put him in the crib and not even 2 minutes later he’s got one leg over the side and is scaling his way nicely down the side of the crib.
He’s ecstatic. He’s proud. He’s off running thinking “Haa haa Mom, look what I can do! Peace Out Crib”
After discussing possible solutions with some of my dearest mommy friends and determining that although putting him in a black and white striped jammy jumpsuit and attaching a ball and chain are probably out of the picture, it looked like the only way around it was a toddler bed. I was and am not ready for this little mischievous dude to be strolling around the house on his own accord so I went to work looking at other alternatives.
Googling 18 month old jumping out of crib resulted in a whole bunch of people telling me what I didn’t want to hear: Toddler Bed.
Try a Crib Tent they say! Crib tents…They’re recalled!
Lower the mattress to the lowest setting they suggest! It’s already lowered darn it!
Put the mattress on the floor of the crib! Yeah, that’s notgonnahappen since it’s not SAFE people.
Well, we found a solution. If you’re 18 month, 16, 17, 15 month old is jumping out of their crib and you have a crib like ours that is lower on the front and higher in the back, try this:
These kids are growing up too fast! One minute he’s a little baby in a crib, the next minute he’s jumping out and landing on his feet and acting like an adult. Next thing I know he’ll be drinking some coffee and doing my taxes.
Share this with your mommy friends who may not have thought of this solution to keep your toddler in a bed a wee bit longer. They’ll thank you for it.

Our crib is like that so I’ll definitely try to remember. Luckily when boyfriend’s daughter starting climbing out of hers, she easily transitioned to a toddler bed. I hope it’s as easy with Chloe.
LOL! I love this. Luckily I never had to deal with Mason trying to escape. We just moved him to his toddler bed back in December.
Such an amazing genius idea that I would have never thought of! You had me cracking up with his “black and white striped jammy suit with ball and chain!” LOL! I’m so glad it’s been working!! Lots of luck!I hope you have a great day! XoxoxMaria
LOL! My son did the same thing! He would climb out of everything. We ended up having him sleep with us to avoid this. We also had to add chain locks on the doors as he would try to escape out of the house too.
My youngest is 18 months old, too. THANK YOU! He hasn’t tried this, but I know he will soon he climbs up on everything.
I can not believe he’s big enough to climb out of the bed!! Where did that bitty baby go?!? I hope your solution continues to work until you’re ready for a toddler bed.
Great idea! I have the same post “Great Escape” last May when our 15 month old mastered the crib climb. We resorted to converting to a toddler bed with a baby gat across the door. Good Luck!
My kids never jumped out but I have had many a friend get the tent. good luck
Haha…mine did the same thing at the same age. Never thought to turn it around!
OMG! You are a genius! What a simple, yet clever solution! I have a 16 mths old. She loves to climb and I’m counting the minutes until she attempts the crib!
That is a great idea. Does not cost a dime and keeps your children safe. Way to go mom.
Great idea! But my son would figure out how to push the crib away from the wall and then it’s a whole ‘nother issue.
Awesome idea! Although I don’t have a crib with the higher back… I can see how great this would work.
I can’t believe I never thought of this. Perfect!! Thank you.
Oh boy! He is hilarious and so darling! We had that problem so I flippin’ switch to a port a crib, play pen, whatever you want to call it. Little stink could never get out haha.
I can’t believe he is “escaping” his crib. It seems like you just had him!I’m glad you found a solution though!
Oh my! He’ll only grow taller right? So you saved yourself a little more time before he is a ‘Big Boy’. Time flies by doesn’t it? Mine is 7 months and I can’t believe it.
I don’t have 18 months old baby anymore but i can totally relate to your frustration heheheh. Your baby is definitely smart. hehehheh. My kids hated their crib too. none of them slept on it when they were babieshttp://www.noypeeto.net/2013/01/mimi-sardine-product-review.html
My daughter used to do the same exact thing! When they want out they want out.. and there is no stopping them! I never thought to actually turn the crib around but that is a clever idea. Now that my daughter is almost 4 we are trying to find away to keep her from opening front and back doors!
oh my gosh that is hilarious and terrifying. My little guys never tried to escape their cribs. I have no idea why this never occurred to them. it just didn’t and I am thankful. Now I am jinxing myself.
That is an awesome and creative idea! My one year co-sleeps though and will not for the life of me sleep in her crib lol
LOL. That first picture is AWESOME! VERY FORTUNATELY, Logan never made the great escape. He did completely break his crib down, though, jumping and thrashing… not sure if that’s worse? Either way — way to “turn the tables” on him!
Hahaha oh man I am so glad you got that pic of him crawling out! Brilliant move by turning the crib around!!XoAsh
I remember the first time my daughter got out of her playpen. She climbed on a ball that she was playing with and just flipped out! She was definitely not even 1 at the time. That was that for the playpen because even without the ball she figured out how to maneuver the soft sides with her little toes. She’s 18 now! And my son was climbing the cabinets by the time he could walk at 9 months so there was NO stopping him. He was up and down basement steps at 1 and had his first chipped tooth by 16 months. And now he is 15. Enjoy these times. They go too fast!
Great idea. Beautiful crib by the way. I had a major problem with this with both of my sons back in the day. One son would climb on the kitchen counter and try to get up on the fridge because I had food up there. Oh my. There was no stopping my son either. Good luck to you!
That might just be the CHEAPEST trick ever!! I have a Kalen and my sis has a braden..Funny how when you name your kids you never hear those names and then they are EVERYWHERE!I always enjoy your posts!!
lol, I would never have thought of that! http://www.thesavingswife.com
oh goodness what a startle i would get seeing my son climbing over his crib and smart thinking of turning the crib away!!
wow, climbing out already Braden?!? That’s such an inventive solution. Jameson has only gotten out (more like fallen!) once, but I’m so keeping this in mind.
What a stinker! Lily still hasn’t attempted that yet, although she has managed to get out of the pack and play. Dylan climbed out at 12 months, and we had the same solution…also, the same crib, LOL!!! It only worked 3 months, and then he climbed out of it that way, but at least it will buy you time, right?!? Another option? Toddler sleep sacks. I wish I had known they existed when Dylan was that age!
